AVID

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) at Independence is a program designed to support students academically in the middle who not only demonstrate untapped potential, but envision a path towards higher education. AVID is an academic elective course within the AVID program that strives to provide each student different levels of study skills, support and help with academic difficulties, preparation for college readiness and success and to help students become proactive within their education. Each week, students receive instruction utilizing a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, tutor-facilitated study groups, and motivational activities, including college field trips. In AVID, students participate in activities that incorporate strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading to support their academic growth.

At Independence, we are especially proud of the community and family environment we build with our students and staff so that everyone is working towards similar goals, collaborating with each other and supporting one another. The AVID teachers offer comfortable environments so that students learn to advocate for themselves and take initiative and responsibility for their own learning.
